Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf

Wilson is proud to be the home of the Eastern NC School for the Deaf. Established in 1964, ENCSD provides quality education for the hearing impaired in eastern NC. ENCSD serves students in grades K-8 from 43 eastern NC counties. The high school program serves 54 counties. An extensive pre-school satellite program serves children from birth to four years. Students living in commuting distance of the school may attend as day students. Residential students return to their homes each weekend, for holiday periods and during the summer to encourage family closeness and support. Chartered buses provide this service at no cost to students. Enrollment in the residential and day programs is open to hearing impaired children ages five and above, who have a hearing impairment severe enough to prevent them from benefiting from local public schools. Services are provided without charge except for a small activity fee.

ENCSD offers qualified high school and middle school students the opportunity to be main-streamed into the local public school system. Hearing impaired student are placed in regular classes with hearing students giving them the benefit of advanced classes and the confidence that they are capable of competing in academics with their hearing peers. ENCSD provides an interpreter for hearing impaired students.

Athletics play a vital role in any educational program. ENCSD offers football, volleyball, basketball, track and soccer.

ENCSD's spacious campus, set on 54 acres, blends the efficiency of modern design with the majesty of traditional architecture. There are two playgrounds, a lighted football field, a gymnasium and an Olympic sized indoor swimming pool.
