Wilson Technical Community College

Wilson Tech is a public two-year post-secondary educational institution with an open-door admissions policy. The college is accredited by the Commission of colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate Degree and by the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges and the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Its purpose is to provide adults with quality learning opportunities, consistent with student and community needs. These opportunities are available to adults regardless of age, sex, social-economic status, ethnic origin, race, religion or handicap. There is no tuition charge for students 65 and older. Several financial aid packages are also available.

Pre-employment education is provided through a wide variety of technical, vocational and general education curricula.

The continuing education program provides instruction in such skills as quilting, sewing, wallpaper hanging, cake decorating, art, religion, languages and much more. Adult basic education for beginners includes a GED prep program with a learning center providing individual and group study.

Barton College

Nestled amidst the tall pines and oaks so often associated with Wilson is another trademark of the community, Barton College. Eastern North Carolina's oldest private college was founded in 1902 by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) under the former name of Atlantic Christian College.

Located 45 miles east of the state capital, Raleigh, Barton is a four year, coed, liberal arts college offering over 40 majors to some 1,400 students. Academic departments are business, education, English and modern languages, fine arts, history and social sciences, and lifelong education. Through its Division of Lifelong Learning, Barton College opened eastern North Carolina's first full-time Weekend College in the fall of 1990.

A 13:1 student faculty ratio and competitive fees helped Barton gain national recognition from Money Magazine in 1990 as the 36th-ranked value among private colleges in the United States. Another factor leading to the ranking was a financial resources office enabling 80% of Barton's students to receive financial aid. Proud of its past, Barton's eye is, however, focussed on the future. This is most evident in the Global Focus international program which addresses the academic needs of students who will strive to be leaders within the world community of the 21st century. As this program unfolds toward full implementation in the mid-1990s, some 200 international students will become part of the college family.

Barton College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, The NC Association of Colleges and Universities; the NC Department of Public Instruction; the NC Board of Nursing; and the Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. Barton's nine athletic teams compete for conference, district and national recognition under the NAIA banner.
